TAKE ACTION: Stop Exploratory Drilling for Copper on Catface Mountain!

In April 2009, Vancouver-based Selkirk Metals Corporation applied to the BC Ministry of Mines for a second season of exploratory drilling for copper on Catface Mountain in Clayoquot Sound. This application is for 22 drill holes to be accessed by rebuilding old de-activated logging roads and building new road through oldgrowth forest.

Drilling is assessing whether it’s economically feasible to develop the low-grade copper-molybdenum deposit on Catface into a huge open-pit mine. The potential mine would be one of the biggest industrial projects on Vancouver Island and would remove the top third of Catface Mountain, including its old growth forest. It would be located in the middle of the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, within sight of the town of Tofino.

PLEASE CONTACT THE BC GOVERNMENT NOW AND TELL THEM THAT YOU DO NOT WANT ANY FURTHER EXPLORATORY DRILLING OR AN ENVIRONMENTALLY DESTRUCTIVE COPPER MINE ON CATFACE MOUNTAIN IN CLAYOQUOT SOUND.

Letters are the most effective. Your letter (or fax/email/phone call) can be short and to the point.

For example:

“I do not want any exploratory drilling or a mine on Catface Mountain in Clayoquot Sound. I request that Selkirk Metals be denied permits for any further exploratory drilling in 2009 or beyond. Please reply and inform me how you will be dealing with any upcoming drilling applications for Catface Mountain.”

For more information about the potential Catface mine that you may want to incorporate into your message, you can check the fact sheet

A public outcry is needed to stop Catface exploratory drilling/potential mine in its tracks before it goes any further. Let’s inundate government with letters, faxes, emails and phone calls! Your participation is invaluable. Thank you for speaking up against destructive industrialization of Clayoquot Sound!
